Silt Fence Installation

Silt Fence Installation

Keep sediment on site. Keep runoff clean.

Silt fence and sediment control installation for construction, roadway, and development projects across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Sediment control

Professional silt fence installation

Herndon Inc. installs silt fencing and other filtration devices on construction sites. Filter fabric, and at times a wire backing, is keyed into the ground and tied to metal stakes to filter water and keep sediment from leaving the site.

Silt fence is one of the most common ways to control soil erosion and keep surrounding areas, roads, and waterways free of muddy stormwater runoff. We also install sediment tubes and silt socks for complete site protection.

Our crews also repair, replace, and remove silt fence as projects progress, remove built-up silt so controls keep working, and install reinforced, wire-backed silt fence where plans call for extra strength.

Benefits

Why install silt fence?

Keeps sediment on site

Traps soil carried by stormwater before it leaves the property.

Protects waterways

Helps keep nearby streams, ponds, and storm drains clean.

Supports compliance

A standard control on stormwater and erosion control plans.

Works with other controls

Pairs with sediment tubes, silt socks, seeding, and matting.

Our process

How we install silt fence

Silt fence is installed by securing geotextile fabric to properly spaced posts and embedding the bottom of the fabric into the soil. The trenched fabric is backfilled and compacted to help prevent runoff from passing underneath the barrier.

Set the line

The fence line is placed based on the site plan and project specifications, typically along the downhill side of disturbed areas.

Install posts and fabric

Geotextile fabric is secured to properly spaced posts, with the bottom edge embedded in a trench.

Backfill and compact

The trench is backfilled and compacted so runoff filters through the fabric instead of passing underneath.

Common questions

Silt fence FAQ

What is silt fence?

Silt fence is a temporary barrier of filter fabric, sometimes backed with wire, keyed into the ground and attached to stakes. Water passes through the fabric while soil stays behind on the site.

Where is silt fence installed?

Silt fence is most commonly installed along the downhill edges of construction sites, around soil stockpiles, and near storm drains and waterways.

Do you install other sediment controls?

Yes. Herndon Inc. installs sediment tubes, silt socks, and other devices so one crew handles your sediment control needs.

Do you maintain and remove silt fence?

Yes. Herndon Inc. repairs and replaces damaged silt fence, removes built-up silt, and removes silt fence once the site is stabilized.

What is reinforced silt fence?

Reinforced, or wire-backed, silt fence adds wire mesh behind the filter fabric for extra strength where project plans require it.
